Please Share Your Memories

Dear Friend,

The Delaware Choral Society has brought fine music to central Delaware for fifty years without interruption. What a testimony to the continuing relevance of the organization’s mission! As we prepared to celebrate this accomplishment, many, many members of the Delaware Choral Society gathered information about the history of the group. Some of this is included in the programs for our two performances of Messiah, and additional material will be included in the program for our gala performance in May. We know that this historical information is incomplete for two reasons. One reason is the space constraints of concert programs; the other is that we simply don’t know all of the history.

In order to remedy this, I’d like to kick off a project that will take place over the first year or two of the next 50 years of singing – I’d like to write a book about the history of Choral Society. Creating a history of the Delaware Choral Society would allow recognition of all of the people who have contributed to the uninterrupted existence of the group. It would allow the in-depth telling of important stories and events that have happened over the first fifty years. It would provide a bridge to sustain the singers who will shepherd Choral Society through the next fifty years, by reminding them of the group’s mission, purpose and vision. Your knowledge and memories could add depth and texture to the telling of the Choral Society’s story. Could you share those memories with me? In addition to the collection of programs, newspaper clippings and other documents that the Choral Society has in its possession, I’d like to gather photographs of the singers, directors, and others who have been instrumental over the years and obtain first person recollections that provide a window on the happenings of yesteryear. Please email me to let me know that you have memories you would like to share about the Choral Society, or post your memories directly to this page by going to the appropriate decade and posting a comment.

Keep in mind that by posting comments on this blog, you are sharing them with the world! Don't share anything that could be considered personal or confidential information.

Thank you for being a friend to the Delaware Choral Society - please consider adding your memories to the rich quilt of history that underlies the uniqueness of this beloved Delaware institution.

Cordially,
Susan A. Vowels
